Worries had piled up that summer.
I needed a sign that things were going to get better

It was the last day of our vacation, a vacation I’d desperately needed—a few days in August with my husband, John, and our daughter Rachel at a lodge in central Pennsylvania. I was a science teacher and always felt closer to God in nature. Bird-watching, hiking and boating helped me forget my worries. Almost.
But then I would find myself mentally replaying everything that had happened to our family over the past couple of months, and I would feel unsettled all over again.
Our troubles had started in June, when a massive thunderstorm ripped through our town, knocking down trees and power lines and damaging a number of homes, including ours. The insurance adjusters came immediately to assess the damage to our roof and siding, but we were making do with quick fixes while roofers and contractors finished repairs on houses that were worse off. Every time I looked at the skylight in our family room—which had been shattered by a fallen tree branch and then hastily patched up—I couldn’t help but wonder why God hadn’t protected our home from the storm.
